Qatar

Qatar are not a heavyweight in football by any means, but their profile have risen in recent years, especially after they hosted the 2022 World Cup. It was a big success for the country to host the biggest single sports showpiece event in the world.

This is the second time that Qatar are playing at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They were invited for the 2021 edition, and they did well by reaching the semi-finals.…

Stan Bowles: The maverick who lit up Loftus Road

Stanley Bowles raised his arms into the air and took the acclaim of the Loftus Road crowd.

It was a familiar sight throughout the 1970s, but this was August 2015 and was to be the last time Bowles graced the pitch he once ruled.

Bowles, the former QPR, Brentford and England inside-forward, has died aged 75 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He looked in good physical shape as he was presented to the crowd on ‘Stan Bowles Day’, QPR’s home fixture against Rotherham, but his condition had already taken its toll.

Nevertheless Don Shanks, Bowles’ best friend and former Rangers team-mate who accompanied him out on to the pitch, told the Guardian: “When Stan walked out at Loftus Road he knew exactly where he was, for some reason. A moment …

Bundesliga 2020-21: Can Lewandowski be the world´s best… again?

There will be no 2020 Ballon d Or due to the coronavirus pandemic, seemingly costing Robert Lewandowski his shot at the top prize.

While perennial contenders Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi each made relatively early Champions League exits last term, Lewandowski was the best player for the best team in Europe.

Bayern Munich won the treble, aided in no small part by an outstanding haul of 55 goals in all competitions from their number nine.

It was the best campaign of Lewandowski s career, yet there appears no reason to believe he cannot hit similar heights in the season to come as we use Opta data to reflect on a stunning year.

LIKE RONALDO BUT BETTER!

Lewandowski brings plenty to the table, but above all he is a goalscorer as he proved in 2019-20…

D.C. United v Philadelphia Union: Gazdag eyes response after landmark goal overshadowed

Daniel Gazdag says the Philadelphia Union must run through walls against D.C. United on Saturday, after he saw a personal milestone overshadowed by back-to-back defeats for Jim Curtin s team.

Gazdag became Philadelphia s all-time leading scorer on Tuesday, netting his 57th goal for the club against the Seattle Sounders at Subaru Park.

However, that goal wasn t enough to prevent the Union from sliding to a 3-2 loss, just three days after they suffered their first MLS defeat of 2024 against Real Salt Lake.

While Gazdag was pleased to seal his place in franchise history, he was frustrated it didn t count for more and wants to make amends this weekend.

It s obviously a nice number. I m happy that I ve become the all-time leading goalscorer for the club. Th…

Qatar 2022 date change strengthens calls for FIFA overhaul

Lobby group New FIFA Now believe FIFA s recommendation that Qatar 2022 be played in November and December underscores the need for change .

New FIFA Now has claimed that the move to hold Qatar 2022 in the middle of the European football season underscores the need for a complete overhaul of international football governance.

While Australian spokesperson Bonita Mersiades insisted the need for change at FIFA is not about solitary decisions, she conceded that the latest revelation regarding the 2022 World Cup could lead to fresh support for New FIFA Now.

FIFA announced on Tuesday that their task force has recommended for Qatar to hold a World Cup during the Middle Eastern nation s winter months rather than the traditional period of June and July.

The plan, …

Dyche still demanding ´the hard yards´ from Everton despite Premier League safety

Sean Dyche claimed putting in the hard yards is what ultimately got Everton over the line when it came to securing their Premier League status.

Everton beat Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford in the space of six days in April to ensure their place in the top flight for another season.

That is despite two separate points deductions, worth eight points overall, having been dished their way this season. Everton are set to appeal the second decision at some point in May.

Last week s 1-0 win over Brentford saw Dyche s team move 11 points clear of 18th-placed Luton Town, meaning Friday s game against the Hatters no longer has so much riding on it for the Toffees, though Dyche will not let the hard work stop.

I took over midway through so it is a bit di…

The Numbers Game: Can Dortmund deny Bellingham and Madrid?

4 Birthday boy Marco Reus has scored four goals against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, more than against any other club. Indeed, no other German player has scored as many goals against Real in the competition Anticipation.

— OptaFranz (@OptaFranz)

Two DFB-Pokal wins are all Reus has to show for his distinguished spell with BVB, having also missed Germany s 2014 World Cup win due to injury. Kroos, on the other hand, could cap his career with a record-equalling sixth European crown, with his first coming with Bayern against Dortmund.

Whoever lifts the trophy, expect emotional scenes.

5 Toni Kroos has won the UEFA Champions League on five occasions in the history of the European Cup/UCL, only Paco Gento (6 times) has won it more often, with…

Euro 2024 social round-up: Belgium´s deleted Mbappe jibe, Gordon´s new wheels

After two long days without any Euro 2024 action, Saturday brought the start of the knockout round.

But aside from the first two last-16 ties taking place in Berlin and Dortmund, there was plenty else going on around the tournament.

From Belgium s Kylian Mbappe gaffe to Anthony Gordon receiving a tongue-in-cheek gift, here is the best of the social media output from Friday and Saturday at Euro 2024.

Belgium backtrack on Mbappe video

France will take on Belgium in perhaps the most high-profile round-of-16 tie on Monday, and the Red Devils social media accounts have upped the tensions between the neighbours.

A video posted to Belgium s channels showed comedian Pablo Andres, who works extensively with the Belgian Football Federation, asking; who will…
