Darren Rovell, Theater Major, Is Actually Kind Of Likable

It has always seemed like Darren Rovell cherished nothing more than farting out press releases to Twitter, writing embarrassing columns, and owning himself while trying and failing to explain economics to people. But no, it appears that Darren has another, perhaps even greater, passion: Musical theater. Rovell revealed last night that he used to be a theater major (a fact which goes a long way in explaining why he plays basketball like this) and that he allegedly gave up a career on Broadway to be a sportswriter. This is a shame because he is definitely better at the whole dramatically-staring-into-the-distance-while-belting-out-a-Beauty-and-the-Beast-song thing than he is at understanding either sports or business. But don’t take it from me, check it out for yourself! And if y…

Faded sluggers Derby cling to survival in football’s great pyramid scheme

Fittingly, nobody won. Even for Derby, there would be no crowning glory, no moment of triumph and precious little dignity. Certainly Wayne Rooney had the decorum and sense of place not to go charging across the turf as if his side had finished any higher than 21st. Instead, vaguely abashed relief and very probably an urge to go and lie down in a dark room for several hours.

On a day of high drama and occasionally high farce, it was Derby who staggered to safety, pipping Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham despite conceding three goals at home in a must-win game.

No heartwarming triumph here, no satisfying redemption stories; just a parable of the bad and the worse, a snapshot of English football in 2021 that, if anyth…

Brazil blow as Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles are ruled out of World Cup

Brazil’s Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus and the defender Alex Telles have both been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after picking up injuries in their final Group G game against Cameroon.

Telles was substituted in the 54th minute of Brazil’s 1-0 defeat by the African side, with Jesus leaving the pitch 10 minutes later. Brazil face South Korea in the last 16 on Monday.

The starting full-backs Danilo and Alex Sandro are out after injuries suffered earlier in the competition and their availability is still unclear, while Neymar is still recovering from an ankle injury incurred in their opening win against Serbia.

It was a World Cup like no other. For the last 12 years the Guardia…

Turkey’s Merih Demiral facing ban over ‘wolf’ celebration in win over Austria

Merih Demiral, Turkey’s goalscorer from their last-16 win over Austria, could face a ban from their quarter-final against the Netherlands on Saturday after Uefa opened an investigation into a gesture with apparent far-right connotations.

Demiral, a centre-back, was the unlikely match winner for Turkey in Leipzig but may be in line for disciplinary action after celebrating his second goal with a “wolf” salute. It is associated with the right-wing extremist nationalist group Grey Wolves and is banned in Austria, where it is punishable by fines of up to €4,000 (£3,400), since 2019.

A Uefa statement read: “An investigation has been opened in accordance with Article 31(4) of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations i…

NFL salary cap is going up, but remember who gets most of the profits in sports

For 93.75 percent of NFL teams their season is over. Those 80,000-seat stadiums will be largely empty until Taylor Swift’s tour makes its visit. The team facility, however, that’s a different story. It will be buzzing with activity between now and September, as NFL franchises look to improve. Once free agency opens up the money machine will be spraying harder and faster than ever before in the NFL. The NFL salary cap will be taking a significant jump in 2023, from $208.2 million to an all-time record high of $224 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. The NFL redid its media rights deals in 2021, and the new terms begin for the 2023 season. While television rights are in flux in many other North American sports with Diamond Sports Group — the company…

Here Are The NFL’s Best Matchups For 2020, Virus Be Damned

The NFL’s schedule release is, well, on schedule. There may not be a season come September 10. But tonight, football fans can pretend that there will be. And so will we. Instead of watching a three-hour made-for-TV video conference about which team got screwed, or what the Bills bye week means for the playoff picture, we’ve compiled a list of games to mark on your calendar. Use a pencil just in case. Games to watch: Week 1Houston @ Kansas City Opening night in the NFL gives us a rematch of the AFC divisional round. In that game, the Texans blew a 21-point lead and lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Expect Houston to come out swinging and, maybe, give us the first upset of the year. Tampa Bay @ New Orleans This game will mark the first divisional meeting between Bree…

What Our Parents Thought Of Deadspin In 2018

Shaina’s mom: Diana’s mom: Articles appear to be designed for the under 30 group !!! Megan’s mom: I am not a big sports fan – but what I like about Deadspin is a perspective on sports that is part social commentary, part humor, and a large measure of political commentary. It’s one of the the few places I see a woman’s perspective in equal measure to a more privileged male perspective. The insider language is sometimes beyond me but the ideas are always fresh. Megan’s dad: I think Deadspin does a good job at what they do. I don’t think of it as a news source, but rather a commentary site for sports. Kind of like PEOPLE magazine is to the movie/tv industry. I find the platform difficult to manipulate. It’s some what counterintuitive. You’re also correct in assu…

Hurdles: They Can Go Wrong

Minkah Fitzpatrick is now out of tonight’s LSU-Alabama game, but not before targeting Russell Gage’s dick and balls as the Tigers receiver tried to hurdle the All-American:

Soccer Coach Laments That Only A Few Of His Players Have Dicks And Balls

Carlisle United have been struggling. The club playing in England's 4th division have gone winless in their last five, including yesterday's 3-1 home loss to Accrington. Manager Keith Curle is fed up with his players, and decided to
call them out in the media for their main deficiency: only a few of them have "male genitalia."
The video above includes the bulk of his comments on BBC Radio, where he complains about how "soft" and "weak" his players are, but if you want to skip ahead to the cock-and-balls talk, go to about the 2:25 mark. There, he recounts a conversation he had in the locker room:
I'm speaking to the players and the players say, "Well, we've got to play people that have got the …" uhh … uhhhhh … h…
