Van Dijk focused on ´achieving greatness´ in Slot´s debut season

Virgil van Dijk said his Liverpool team-mates are looking to achieve greatness this season after maintaining Arne Slot s winning start against Manchester United.

Van Dijk has helped his side record three victories from their opening three league games without conceding for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign.

The Dutchman marked his 200th Premier League game for Liverpool with another commanding display, taking his tally to 140 wins in the competition, already the most wins any player has picked up in their first 200 for the club in the division.

Van Dijk recorded more touches (91) than any other player, while also winning all five of the aerial duels he contested.

He also completed 69 of his 73 attempted passes, ending the contest with a pass a…

´I wanted to help my friends´ – Mbappe back but Bayern lead after first leg

Kylian Mbappe was desperate to help Paris Saint-Germain as he returned from injury against Bayern Munich, and remains confident of their progress in the Champions League.

Mbappe had been a doubt for Tuesday s last-16 first leg between PSG and Bayern at the Parc des Princes.

However, the World Cup Golden Boot-winning forward was named on the bench and appeared in the second half, introduced shortly after Kingsley Coman had scored the opening goal.

That would prove the decisive strike in a 1-0 Bayern win as Mbappe twice had the ball in the net but was twice denied by offside calls.

Although PSG have now lost three matches in a row in all competitions within a single season for the first time since 2011-12, the late rally that included Mbappe s disallowed go…

Bayern ready for ´strongest possible opponent´ in Guardiola´s Man City

Prolific striker Erling Haaland has scored 39 goals in all competitions since signing for City, including five against Leipzig in City s second-leg rout on Tuesday.

But while Salihamidzic acknowledged the quality Haaland and City possess, he has confidence in his team s defence to hold up against such a formidable attacking force.

Haaland is one of the best strikers in the world, Salihamidzic added. He does it very, very well.

But we defended very well against Paris. I believe that we perform best against the best teams.

These are also the highlights of the season for the fans. This is a top pairing. I m looking forward to it.

Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn feels games against the likes of City are a great litmus test for whether the Bavarian side hav…

Sane sympathises with Reus as Euro 2016 opportunity knocks

Leroy Sane says he feels sympathy for Marco Reus, after the Borussia Dortmund star s injury paved the way for him to take a place in Germany s Euro 2016 squad.

Two-cap Schalke attacker Sane made Joachim Low s selection as the World Cup winners look to add a fourth European Championship to their collection, after Reus failed to shake off an adductor injury in time.

Bayer Leverksuen s Julian Brandt and Karim Bellarabi, as well as Sebastian Rudy of Hoffenheim, also missed out of selection with Sane preferred among Low s attacking options after scoring nine goals in 42 games for Schalke last season.

You obviously feel for your team mates who don t make it, Sane told the DFB s official website.

They are all great football players and wonderful colleagues. <…

Prediction: Qatar vs Honduras

Prediction: Qatar to win 2-1

Best Odds:

Bookmaker:

Qatar and Honduras will lock horns with each other in 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup Group B this week. The match between Carlos Queiroz’s side and Diego Vásquez’s team will be held at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona and is scheduled to kick off at 12:45am UK time on Friday.

Qatar

Qatar are not a heavyweight in football by any means, but their profile have risen in recent years, especially after they hosted the 2022 World Cup. It was a big success for the country to host the biggest single sports showpiece event in the world.

This is the second time that Qatar are playing at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They were invited for the 2021 edition, and they did well by reaching the semi-finals.…

Stan Bowles: The maverick who lit up Loftus Road

Stanley Bowles raised his arms into the air and took the acclaim of the Loftus Road crowd.

It was a familiar sight throughout the 1970s, but this was August 2015 and was to be the last time Bowles graced the pitch he once ruled.

Bowles, the former QPR, Brentford and England inside-forward, has died aged 75 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He looked in good physical shape as he was presented to the crowd on ‘Stan Bowles Day’, QPR’s home fixture against Rotherham, but his condition had already taken its toll.

Nevertheless Don Shanks, Bowles’ best friend and former Rangers team-mate who accompanied him out on to the pitch, told the Guardian: “When Stan walked out at Loftus Road he knew exactly where he was, for some reason. A moment …

Bundesliga 2020-21: Can Lewandowski be the world´s best… again?

There will be no 2020 Ballon d Or due to the coronavirus pandemic, seemingly costing Robert Lewandowski his shot at the top prize.

While perennial contenders Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi each made relatively early Champions League exits last term, Lewandowski was the best player for the best team in Europe.

Bayern Munich won the treble, aided in no small part by an outstanding haul of 55 goals in all competitions from their number nine.

It was the best campaign of Lewandowski s career, yet there appears no reason to believe he cannot hit similar heights in the season to come as we use Opta data to reflect on a stunning year.

LIKE RONALDO BUT BETTER!

Lewandowski brings plenty to the table, but above all he is a goalscorer as he proved in 2019-20…

D.C. United v Philadelphia Union: Gazdag eyes response after landmark goal overshadowed

Daniel Gazdag says the Philadelphia Union must run through walls against D.C. United on Saturday, after he saw a personal milestone overshadowed by back-to-back defeats for Jim Curtin s team.

Gazdag became Philadelphia s all-time leading scorer on Tuesday, netting his 57th goal for the club against the Seattle Sounders at Subaru Park.

However, that goal wasn t enough to prevent the Union from sliding to a 3-2 loss, just three days after they suffered their first MLS defeat of 2024 against Real Salt Lake.

While Gazdag was pleased to seal his place in franchise history, he was frustrated it didn t count for more and wants to make amends this weekend.

It s obviously a nice number. I m happy that I ve become the all-time leading goalscorer for the club. Th…

Qatar 2022 date change strengthens calls for FIFA overhaul

Lobby group New FIFA Now believe FIFA s recommendation that Qatar 2022 be played in November and December underscores the need for change .

New FIFA Now has claimed that the move to hold Qatar 2022 in the middle of the European football season underscores the need for a complete overhaul of international football governance.

While Australian spokesperson Bonita Mersiades insisted the need for change at FIFA is not about solitary decisions, she conceded that the latest revelation regarding the 2022 World Cup could lead to fresh support for New FIFA Now.

FIFA announced on Tuesday that their task force has recommended for Qatar to hold a World Cup during the Middle Eastern nation s winter months rather than the traditional period of June and July.

The plan, …

Dyche still demanding ´the hard yards´ from Everton despite Premier League safety

Sean Dyche claimed putting in the hard yards is what ultimately got Everton over the line when it came to securing their Premier League status.

Everton beat Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford in the space of six days in April to ensure their place in the top flight for another season.

That is despite two separate points deductions, worth eight points overall, having been dished their way this season. Everton are set to appeal the second decision at some point in May.

Last week s 1-0 win over Brentford saw Dyche s team move 11 points clear of 18th-placed Luton Town, meaning Friday s game against the Hatters no longer has so much riding on it for the Toffees, though Dyche will not let the hard work stop.

I took over midway through so it is a bit di…
